The Giver Summary
|
Jonas lives in a very different world. In his world they have no color, music, or feelings. When the book starts, it is almost December. That is a big thing, because in December they celebrate their Birthday. In this world they all celebrate on the same day, and all together. Each age gets a different gift. A new jacket, bike, or haircut. They are all different. For Jonas he is getting his assignment. The Assignment is important, because it will be their job for a long time. Jonas becomes the receiver of memory. It is a big deal, and really important. There is also a lot of pressure, because the person before him failed. He is a little nervous, and wants to learn about the person that failed. Nobody would tell him anything. Then he starts his job. He receives memories from the giver. There are good and bad memories, all from before. From a different world. From a world with snow, love, and war. Around that time his family also takes care of a baby. They are not supposed to know, but his name is Gabe. Gabe is a normal baby, but he cries at night. The community wants to release him because of it. Jonas doesn't know what release is, but he wants Gabe to stay. Gabe will stay for a while, but eventually he will have to go back. They already know that, because the family already has 2 kids. The community will only let each family have 2. So Jonas volunteers for Gabe to stay in his room. At night when Gabe cries, Jonas gives him good memories. They help Gabe sleep. Then one day Jonas learns what Release is. He gets really angry. He thought his world was perfect, but it was not true. Then the Giver gives Jonas a plan. Jonas takes Gabe and runs. He leaves the community. He knows he might die, but why live in the community? It is a bad place, and a place he wants to leave. Will he make it to the other world? Is the other world still out there? Will they get caught? What exactly is release? What happened to the person before Jonas? Read the book, and find the answers.
